So, hmm. Thing.

Here's what I'm thinking about how this is going to go:

I've been gradually transitioning to using "marylex" as my online handle for a couple of years, now - the fic website uses that name, as do my delicious and twitter accounts - and I've purchased a DW.org account under that username. This is partly because I've never been all that good about maintaining the division between Alexa and Mary to begin with. When I started using "marythefan," back in the day, I thought I was going to use that for RPS and keep "lexa_c" for FPS, but as I got deeper into popslash and lotrips, Mary just became my everyday persona, and I interacted with the same people in RPS and FPS fandoms, and the "lexa_c" journal never got used a whole lot, except suddenly, around the winter holidays, I'd re-appear over there, mainly because of the Oz Magi story swap.

Anyway. This is also partly because I think, fannishly, I'm undergoing the same kind of sea-change I did right before I picked up the "marythefan" handle and got involved in popslash and lotrips. I'm kind of in a fannish malaise, and I'm dilettanting around in a handful of fandoms, but there's nothing I'm really committed to, currently, and ... just. I'm at another fannish turning point, I think, and I don't know where I'm going from here, and rather than get a tattoo, why not just get another new name? This one, though, remains connected to both of my past identities, so there's some kind of continuity there.

I don't know what my fannish focus will continue to be, and if this is the chance you need to finally wave goodbye, I can understand. I will still be dilettanting around in bandom and Oz and poking at Trek and talking about Dollhouse and looking for queer movies and books and TV shows and doing the fannish things that I've been doing for the past year? two years? But I also can pretty much guarantee that a lot more of my focus is going to be turned to original work in the foreseeable future, because I've talked around it long enough, and it's time to get some of this stuff actually written and see if I can sell any of it - so there's going to be quite a bit of me talking about that.

So. What this means: the

lexa_c journal will be going dormant (which it practically was, in any case), along with a DW.org backup version of it.

marythefan at DW.org also will effectively go dormant, although it'll remain publicly accessible.

I'm moving over to

marylex at DW.org; I'll continue to crosspost entries from there to

marythefan at LJ for ... now. I'm not sure for how long.

I ... feel kind of like I'm doing the last wiping of the windowsills and getting together the spare keys to turn over to the landlord.

Unexpected day off coming up, giving me three free days in a row, in exchange for working a day later into my next week. (i.e. I'm getting Wed. off in exchange for working Sun.)

Now, I have to decide if I want to spend one of my upcoming days off making jam. Strawberries are going to be gone if I don't go ahead and get it done. But ugh. I don't want to think about it right now, especially as the kitchen is a mess with nothing close to the kind of room available that I'd need. And I was planning to do it next week, anyway ...

Gamble? Or not?

How far into strawberry season are we, anyway?

Other To Do this week:

1) write at least 4 sections of my Big Bang story (aka 6,000 words)

2) write a matching amount of words on BYH and/or original-version camber

3) CLEAN THE BALCONY preparatory to setting up an altar out there next week

4) finish reading at least through chapter 7 in Comparative Mythology

5) finish knitting the last skein onto the shawl I'm working on

6) FIND YARN for the Jayne hat

7) check on Spanish class availability later in the summer

Let's see how much of that actually gets done. Har.

Also, I think I might start transitioning over to the

Oh, package of day-old bargain bagels, you continue to sadden me by resolutely remaining chocolate chip, instead of becoming the cinnamon raisin I thought you were.

Note to self: Do not buy packages of bagels that are NOT MARKED.

In other news, it's not even like he's my favorite ... or even close to my favorite ... but the Trek Reboot icon I find myself desperately wanting is a Kirk icon with the text "Spaceman Spiff" - anyone? anyone?

And now, back to writing. Forty-five minutes left to be productive before I have to get ready for work.

And now, bed, for to be up at ass o'clock in the a.m. Thanks for tacking on that extra seven minutes, Ryan. That was totally necessary. For values of necessary that = completely pointless.

Mmm, potato salad, so freakin' good. I had to leave the kitchen just so I wouldn't eat it all before dinner.

Tomatoes edged corn, y'all, so I'm going to keep it simple and just slice them and put some balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper on the table so they can be individually dressed.

Now I'm thinking, maybe corn next time. With some steamed shrimp. And lots of drippy, tasty melted butter for both the shrimp and the corn, because if we're going to make a mess, we might as well go all the way. I'll have to keep an eye out for shrimp on sale. What else to have with that? Hmm.

I also had three boiled eggs left over, so I made some deviled eggs, too, although I think I overdid the vinegar a bit. I've never made a batch that small.

omg, I am ... fighting to keep myself from going back in the kitchen and having another couple of spoonsful of potato salad. I forget how good that stuff is.

Background: I spent the last three days helping my mama pack up for a move, so Sunday dinner was again pushed to later in the week, i.e., tonight. In the refrigerator, we had hard cider and way too many eggs, so I said to myself, "Ham. Ham will go with the hard cider and the potato salad I will make with some of the eggs." So, dinner tonight will be ham and potato salad, accompanied by hard cider. Dessert will be simple - strawberries with homemade whipped cream. It's strawberry season, and I feel I should take advantage of that.

(Note to self - cross fingers the season will hold and MAKE JAM the first week of June.)

Here's the question: I have an array of vegetables I could make to go with the ham and potato salad:

a) cabbage (steamed, probably)
b) corn (on the cob)
c) tomatoes (sliced)

What to make?

Make some decisions here for me, y'all.

Meanwhile, eggs and potatoes are set to boil, and I'm off to do some research on the local watersheds for a bit.

Yes, yes. I'm sure there are many of you who are wondering which particular thing I've narrowed it down to, to come to that conclusion in the subject line.

Here's what I'm talking about today:

I've been sitting on five DW.org invite codes like a dumbass. (Suddenly, I'm all, invite codes? I haz them?)

Y'all know what to do, I trust. Speak up, if anyone even still needs them, at this point.

Will screen to protect email or other id'ing info in comments, if necessary.

1) Things there are not enough of, re: iTrek* fic: a) Sulu sexing up other members of the Enterprise, b) debauching of 17-year-old Chekov, omg. He's 17, y'all. It's like the movie writers said, hmmm. What will make Mary happy? I know, let's make Chekov as close to underage as we plausibly can without turning him into Wesley Crusher!

As well they should, considering everything else they managed to reboot without finding it necessary to give Uhura some goddam pants, which pains me. Seriously, movie? Someone pointed out that there are no women visible in the command structure at any point in the movie - it's probably because you can't put a 45-year-old woman in what is apparently the official Starfleet uniform for women without making her look ridiculous. Jesus.

At any rate, more Sulu sexing. More 17-year-old Chekov sexing.

Combining the two would be more than acceptable, also.

2) Oh, Fox. I am ... displeased by this decision on SCC. There was no call for that.

3) OTOH, I am pleased by the decision on Dollhouse. I am still sitting on much verbiage about how 95 percent of fandom seems to be watching the show wrong, but working all that out will take more time than I am willing to spend right now.

4) Oh, delicious.com, how I love your auto-complete feature. I've had the new computer for, what? A week and a half? And already you have figured out that when I type "b," it means I'm going to want a search for "bob/brian," and when I type "c," means I'm going to want a search for "cook/archuleta," and when I type "d," it means I'm going to want a search for "dan/jepha."

Possibly, I am predictable.

Not that there's ever much new THERE, on any of those searches, but at least I don't have to expend much effort on them.

5) WTF? So I manged to get my hands on the first three eps of Leverage - don't ask, because I'll plead the Fifth - and only the first part of any of them will work on my computer. So I've now seen the first 14 minutes of each of the first three eps. Thanks a lot, TNT and Microsoft.

Make my decisions for me?

I still have to sign up for Boom, Boom, Baby!, the Oz Big Bang challenge - even though I'm one of the people running the thing - because I can't decide what to write.

Choices are:

a) The super extend-o remix version of Beggar's Banquet, a post-series Alvarez/Beecher/O'Reily short written from an outside (OC) POV. The extend-o version would be written in rotating Alvarez, Beecher and O'Reily POVs and would cover a longer time period - from the prison evacuation at the end of S6 to a bit after the end of the original short story. Pros: set in an existing "universe" with an existing readership and built-in popularity; has a complete outline, in excruciating detail, of everything that's supposed to happen through the course of the story arc, so all I really have to do is write it all out. Cons (har): the "super extend-o" description is an understatement - I've projected this full story will end up being 75,000-80,000 words, maybe more, by the time it's finished, and that's an awful lot of writing for three and a half months. This is not the novel I'm supposed to be writing this year.

b) A Beecher/Liam Meaney story, set post-series and .... well, I don't know. Following the development of their relationship. Pros: the shortest option, probably won't be much more than the required 25,000 words; it's Beecher/Liam, featuring Ryan O'Reily's cheerfully thuggish button man - half of whose lines can be summed up as "You gonna kill him? :D? :D?" - trying to court Tobias Beecher in the middle of Oz. Cons: I have no plot, just some mental images of awkward courting in the middle of Oz, of hot sex, and of Ryan benevolently offering his permission to both parties to have a relationship, while each of them looks at him in bemusement; it's Beecher/Liam, half which pair includes a tertiary character who had about five lines across six seasons, half of which can be summed up as "You gonna kill him? :D? :D?"

c) An Oz/Dollhouse fusion suggested by

ozsaur. Pros: OH MY GOD, so much potential that has my brain on overload, with the same ideas of coercion and abuse and lack of agency that exist in Dollhouse explored from another angle, and the chance to do some exploring of the identity issues that I wanted but the show only skimmed over, and the way the Oz characters fit so well into that milieu, with the inmates signing contracts instead of getting prison sentences, and Tim McManus as an Adele DeWitt-style overseer, with that twisted idealism and the misbegotten idea that some good could come out of the Dollhouse, and ... and ... and ... Cons: No actual plot narrowed down, nor an idea, yet, of who would be the actual focus and what angle to attack from; potential for a really intensive story that's possibly quite long.

I also considered a Five Things That Never Happened in Oz story that I started poking at for a

hardtime100 flashfic challenge but that kept growing - I could hit the required wordcount at 4,000-5,000 words per Thing, plus the additional One Thing That Did, but ... it seems a little like cheating, maybe, because it's technically five (six) different stories collected together. Also some people are funny about book-based fanfic, which most of it would be. So. Maybe not.

Writer's sign-up deadline is tomorrow. WHAT DO I WRITE?

Huh. I was thinking it would work better as a British-style limited-episode show, but damn if they haven't made me want another season, with that last ep. Also, I still am watching this show at about a 180-degree angle from about 95 percent of fandom, because it seems blazingly obvious to me that the show is excruciatingly aware of every single thing it's doing and that it's never compromised on the idea that what's going on is skeevy and morally questionable - I mean, how many times do they have to draw anvilicious parallels between what the Dollhouse does and child molestation/prostitution, or between Topher and a serial killer? But now I am getting into a whole long rant that has been building all season, and I don't have time today.

In conclusion, I'm now going to go bury myself in computer code in preparation for my final presentation this evening. After which, no more class at least 'til mid-summer. Maybe 'til September.

I just checked my livejournal openID account on DW, and it records 4,495 comments posted to DW.

I have never posted to DW using my openID account. (I have never posted anywhere using my openID account.)

Therefore, QED, etc., yours truly, all those comments must have been imported as part of journal entries moved to DW from LJ.

LJ, itself, records only 6,766 comments posted by the marythefan journal. This means about 2/3 of anything I've ever had to say to anyone at LJ has been imported to DW.

The 4,495 figure also does not include comments on communities, as they cannot (currently?) be imported.

What does this mean?

Clearly, I am ALL UP IN the circle of early adopters. Freakin' magpies, all of you. If I ever wanted to distract you, I just have to spread around a few crumpled pieces of tinfoil. Damn, y'all.

In other news, shawl is finished, all stitches are dropped, and it's currently being blocked. I'll try to get a couple of pictures before I wrap it up at ass o'clock in the a.m., so that I can mail it after work. For, now, omG, I should be in bed, and I am not, and I intend to fix that right now.

So, I am making the Sunday Market Shawl, and I am rapidly approaching the end of my last skein, and I am eyeing those last row directions with some trepidation.

Really, pattern? I'm just ... gonna push every third stitch off the needle instead of knitting it, and this whole thing isn't going to go to hell and fall apart in a massive tangle of yarn? Theoretically, I can see how it's supposed to work. It's just that after all this knitting (and I doubled the cast on, so it was even MORE knitting), I am ... eyeing this with some suspicion.

This is either going to be really cool or incredibly traumatic.

Does anyone know if there have been any fandom Big Bangs that have included stories written in a language other than English?

We're exploring this option for Boom, Boom, Baby!, but there are a couple of concerns, including how much readership a writer can expect to get for a non-English story (likely Spanish, in this case) - and I can see where someone would be hesitant to write 25,000+ words with that concern.

I wondered if anyone else had dealt with this, in a Big Bang setting or other challenge?

Any ideas?

Unexpectedly worked on Sunday, as cover for an ill co-worker - a short shift, but I pushed my week for Sunday dinner to Tuesday. Plans for tomorrow include using the new wok, so: Fried rice, with carrots, water chestnuts and maybe zucchini in, along with lettuce wraps with lots of ginger and garlic, sesame oil and rice vinegar and hot red pepper, on top of shredded carrot, broccoli, cabbage barely cooked and still crisp (that's the plan, anyway), and a bit of chicken.

Asian cuisine is notoriously hard to pair with wine, which was developed to complement Western dishes and interacts in unexpected ways with the sweet/spicy combos you get in a lot of Asian dishes, and every bit of advice I've gotten is to go with something UNOAKED, if I'm going to insist on wine instead of just doing the decent thing and going with beer. Might still do that, but I also took it as a bit of a challenge and may pair it with a rosé - I've got a sparkling version that'll probably be best, along with a regular rosé that's supposed to go well with spicy stuff, as a backup.

For dessert, I'm thinking cheesecake pie with strawberries, although there's a hell of a lot of strawberries, and if I get too busy tomorrow - I've got to finish this knitting project in time to block it early Wednesday - I may just go for some more real whipped cream and let that and the strawberries stand on their own. Even if I make the pie, def going to cheat on the graham cracker crust and just buy it, rather than trying it from scratch, this time out.

All of which means I should not still be up. I should be in bed. I need to get up early and go to the grocery store, because I wouldn't do it on the way home from class tonight because it was raining omg, and I didn't want to get wet. Because I am a wimp.

It's so new. And shiny. And empty.

I would pet the screen, but that would get fingerprints on it.
